Two Providence Southern California hospitals receive Healthgrades’ 2016 Patient Safety Excellence Award
April 11, 2016
Healthgrades, a leading consumer resource for hospitals and physicians, this week awarded Providence medical centers in Torrance and Burbank its 2016 Patient Safety Excellence Award.
Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank and Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance were among 466 recipients of the award. These hospitals comprise the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide evaluated for performance on 14 Patient Safety Indicators as defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
According to Healthgrades, more than 270,000 occurrences involving patient safety incidents could have been avoided nationally if all hospitals performed similarly to these hospitals. Accidental cuts, punctures, and hemorrhages; collapsed lungs; infections; and pressure ulcers account for 75 percent of patient safety events reported by hospitals.
“Our analysis reveals that patient safety is strongly associated with high quality care, so it is vitally important to choose a hospital that performs well on these key indicators,” said Evan Marks, Healthgrades’ chief strategy officer.
Providence has committed resources across its Southern California operations to educate employees in the principles of high reliability organizations – investing in a program that focuses on practicing safe practices every day.
Patient safety is strongly associated with high-quality care and hospitals that are recognized for patient safety are equally or more likely than other hospitals to have better outcomes in specialty care, Marks said.
“Variation in how care is delivered contributes to events and errors,” said Mary Kingston, chief executive, Providence South Bay Communities. “Our goal is to create a culture of high reliability where there is little variation from best known practices and that the entire care team is aligned in safe behaviors.”
“This is one more example of both the importance and commitment we have all made to safety and quality,” said Julie Sprengel, chief executive of Providence Saint Joseph.
