Preventing or managing diabetes is an excellent way to embark on better health—and Providence Health & Services, Southern California, is your one-stop-shop.
The Cardiometabolic Health Center
Located at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance, the Cardiometabolic Health Center exists primarily for the prevention of diabetes, heart attack and stroke.“Diabetes, like many other diseases, progresses without symptoms for many years before a tipping point is reached,” says John Armato, M.D., an internal medicine physician at Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance.
Experts at the Cardiometabolic Health Center help identify your risk for diabetes prior to this tipping point. One strategy is called GISTTM glucose tolerance testing—a simple four-part blood test that can be done in two hours. “In the we used to look only at blood sugars, but nor we also look at insulin sensitivity and production,” Dr. Armato says. Test results reveal a patients risk for developing diabetes.
All five Providence hospitals offer extensive education to help adults with diabetes better manage the disease. Additionally, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center serves a large gestational diabetes population, and Providence Tarzana Medical Center offers diabetes education for children, says Candace Fontenette, R.D., a dietician in the Diabetes Care Center at Providence Tarzana.
