Community Announcement: Governor Brown signs AB908 into law

October 05, 2017

We extend our sincerest gratitude to the California Legislature, Governor Jerry Brown and to our many community and business supporters who helped us secure approval of Assembly Bill 908 (AB 908). On September 28, 2017, Governor Brown signed AB 908 into law. This legislation will preserve access to care for thousands of patients and protect hundreds of jobs at Providence Tarzana Medical Center as we begin work on Providence Tarzana Reimagined. This project includes retrofitting buildings on the campus to meet the state mandated deadline and completing construction of our new state-of-the-art patient wing.

The measure, authored by Assemblyman Matt Dababneh, D-Encino, and co-authored by state senators Henry Stern, D-Canoga Park, and Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, allows for the hospital to move forward with our $540 million campus expansion and renovation. AB 908 will extend the 2020 seismic retrofitting deadline for Providence Tarzana, allowing for construction of a new patient wing rather than extensive retrofitting of the existing patient tower. This plan meets our goal of minimal disruption for patients.

Passage of this bill provides certainty as Providence Tarzana begins to retrofit existing buildings of the main hospital to further improve safety in a major earthquake. In addition, plans have been finalized for the new patient wing, which will feature a new and expanded emergency department, private patient rooms, the latest technology and healing gardens. Construction on the new patient wing will commence in early 2018.

Each of you are vital to the success of Providence Tarzana Reimagined and we appreciate the wonderful community support we have received. Thank you again for your continued support as we look forward to the future and the new healing space we will provide for our patients and the community.

Sincerely,
Dale Surowitz, Chief Executive
