If at any time you have questions, concerns, or would just like to better understand your infant's overall plan of care, you may request a family conference. A family conference is held in our NICU waiting room, and includes the neonatologist, nurses, social worker, and any other person in your support system that you would like to have present, be it chaplain, extended family members, or close friend. During these meetings, the neonatologist will outline the baby's current condition, progress, and overall treatment plan. You will then be given an opportunity to verbalize any concerns, suggestions, and ask questions. If your baby is younger than 30 weeks gestation, we highly recommend scheduling regular family conferences throughout your baby's admission.
The neonatologists and nurse practitioner make rounds every morning in the NICU. If you ever would like an informal update on your child's progress or the plan of care, please, let your baby's nurse know you would like to be updated by your infant's doctor/nurse practitioner. She will let them know of your request so that all of your questions can be answered.
