What Is Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)?
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical treatment for patients with uncontrollable Movement Disorders. The treatment uses two surgically implanted medical devices, similar to cardiac pacemakers, to deliver electrical stimulation to precisely targeted areas within the brain. Stimulation of these areas blocks the signals that cause disabling motor symptoms. As a result, patients can achieve greater control over their body movements, and regain control of their lives.
Studies recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirmed that Deep Brain Stimulation has changed the lives of many patients, many times allowing them to resume normal activities and reduce or eliminate the need for medications.
