There are a variety of conditions that affect women as they age, from irregular menstrual cycles, fibroids and incontinence to prolapsed pelvic floors. With our state-of-the art imaging equipment for quick diagnoses, and board certified physicians who can provide the latest medical or surgical treatments available, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center remains committed to providing the complete spectrum of care for your gynecologic health.
The experienced gynecologists at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center are prepared to handle everything from basic annual exams to advanced surgical procedures. In fact, surgeons at Providence Saint Joseph perform the latest Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgeries (SILS) for hysterectomies and gallbladder removals. These minimally invasive procedures typically involve less pain, faster recovery and minimal scarring.
Richard L. Friedman, MD, a gynecologic oncologist, performed the first laparoscopic hysterectomy at PSJMC in 2009, cutting a half-inch single incision in his 50-year old patients's bellybutton for surgery to detach her uterus. Aided the entire time by a high-tech device and a computer screen image, Dr. Friedman then removed the woman's uterus, which is a pear-sized organ, through her vagina.
"Hysterectomy patients can go back to work in a week or two with this technology, compared to a six-week recovery time after traditional surgery," he said. "There's much less pain and you don't have a visible scar."
