Integrative Medicine: An Emerging Science in Cancer Care
Complementary therapies proven effective in supporting cancer patients when paired with traditional methods have been incorporated into the comprehensive cancer treatment program at the Disney Family Cancer Center. Providence Saint Joseph's evidence-based Integrative Medicine program, housed on the second floor of the Cancer Center, provides cancer patients access to complementary therapies to help them through their conventional treatments. Among these therapies are acupuncture, massage, herbal medicine and nutritional counseling, yoga, guided imagery, meditation, Tai Chi, therapeutic touch, and Qi Gong - all used in addition to conventional cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
Integrative medicine involves the patient in the decision making process and combines complementary and conventional medical therapies into an individualized, evidence-based treatment program. By giving patients access to a broad range of proven therapies, we ultimately give them more control over their own destinies. We also hope to contribute to the increasing body of research on Integrative Medicine and demonstrate that patients using complementary therapies experience improved quality of life and better outcomes compared to patients receiving conventional therapies alone.
