When you come to a hospital, you expect excellent care. You usually don’t think about your safety. At Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center we know the importance of surveillance and prevention – a culture of safety means we look for any possible hazards and do our best to put fool-proof practices in place to ensure the safety of our patients, our visitors and our employees.
It starts at the front door, where on rainy days plastic bags are available for dripping umbrellas, keeping our floor dry and reducing the possibility that someone might slip. The culture of safety winds its way to every patient room, where beds, tables and equipment are placed just right to guard against accidents.
We found that patients often don’t want to bother a nurse and will try to reach for things themselves, or perhaps get out of bed when they’re not quite ready. Knowing that’s a possibility, we make sure our patients know to ask for help, no matter how big or small their needs. You’re in our hands and we want to make sure we provide the best quality, compassion, and safety during your stay.
Our culture of safety permeates throughout each department among nurses and staff members who ensure each patient has proper identification and that his or her privacy is protected. Visitors are asked to check in at the front desk and to wear badges. Our pharmacy and our lab team double and triple check medications and tests to guard against any mishaps.
We are so dedicated to your safety and the safety of the community that in meeting rooms far from hospital beds, we have committees that meet to plan how we will respond to all types of emergencies, including natural disasters. This preparation is detailed and addresses all scenarios. For example, our surgical teams have been trained how to guard a patient in surgery during an earthquake. Each unit is equipped with emergency supplies and trains regularly on how to use them.
We know you come to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center because you trust the care we provide. We want you to know our mission for your good health and safety is a top priority.
