Breakthroughs Spring 2016
May 05, 2016
Letter from the Chief Executive
It’s hard to believe two years have passed since Providence Health & Services assumed sponsorship of Saint John’s Health Center. At the time of this transition we noted the similarities between our former sponsor, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, and Providence. Both are not-for-profit Catholic ministries focused on providing high-quality, compassionate care and serving the poor and vulnerable in our midst.
Today I’m so proud of the progress we have made at Saint John’s to adhere to the charitable values established by the Sisters of Charity and Sisters of Providence. Providence Health & Services, Southern California, has an impressive track record of identifying the needs of the underserved and taking measures to assist those individuals.
At Saint John’s we have always provided funds to community groups who help disadvantaged children and adults. But now we are taking a bigger step by identifying specific needs in our own Westside neighborhoods and forming programs and services that fulfill our commitment to community service. On page 6 of this issue of Breakthroughs you can read about our new program to help homeless patients and our efforts to partner with other community groups to make our neighborhoods healthier and to improve access to care.
This issue also has stories on our new stroke telehealth program, which allows us to provide timely evaluation of potential stroke patients by experts in stroke neurology. We also have a wonderful feature on men’s health featuring Mehran Movassaghi, MD. Dr. Movassaghi will be among a group of physicians who will open offices at our new outpatient center in Playa Vista. This office will improve convenient access to primary care on the Westside.
Saint John’s is home to one of the finest group of physicians in the country, and we continue to recruit the best and brightest. Recently we welcomed to our staff one of the most highly regarded thoracic surgeons in the nation, Robert J. McKenna Jr., MD. You can read about his innovative approach to lung cancer surgery on page 16. Our lengthy list of primary care physicians and top-ranked specialists means residents who live west of the 405 Freeway will never need to travel far for their health care.
With utmost respect,
