School Health Program
Providence’s School Health Program was initiated in April, 2000, at the request of five elementary schools located in low-income communities around Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. These schools had lost governmental funding to support a school nurse and approached the Medical Center to see if we could provide this much needed health resource.
Our School Health Program has now expanded to twelve K-8 elementary schools in low-income communities throughout the San Fernando Valley. School nurses hired by Providence provide a variety of services that include:
- on-site health screenings (height, weight, body mass index, hearing, vision, dental, scoliosis, and blood pressure);
- referrals for students in need of health services;
- health education;
- and CPR training for teachers.
The program has established relationships with local community clinics, pediatricians, and dental programs for them to accept referrals for children needing additional services.
