Providence Holy Cross' interfaith approach to spiritual care allows chaplains to serve the unique needs of patients, family members and staff of the health care community. The chaplains' focus is on supporting the deeper spiritual meaning and understanding of suffering and sickness, health and wellness. We offer this ministry through direct service, education and consultation in the compassion and charge of God's love.
Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is committed to providing care that is attentive not only to your physical needs, but to your emotional and spiritual needs as well. The chaplains of our Spiritual Care Department are an integral part of our healthcare team on each unit, ministering to persons of all faith traditions, as well as those without a specific faith tradition.
What is a Chaplain?
Quite simply, a chaplain is a minister who has undergone specialized training to serve in an institutional setting. Thus, chaplains may be found serving with the police, the military, fire departments and, of course, within hospitals. Your chaplain will have first earned a graduate degree in theology, divinity, spirituality, or a related field, and then served as a resident in a intensive training program to help them better understand how to apply their theological expertise to specific medical situations.
What Might We Talk About?
The ministry of the chaplain is fully respectful of your own experience of faith. The role of the chaplain is not to proselytize, but to help you reflect on how to apply your own values and beliefs to the experience of being in the hospital.
Together, you may consider issues such as:
- Why me?
- Where is the sacred in all of this?
- What do I do with pain and anger?
- What does it mean to let go of this life?
- Why do bad things happen to good people?
Contacting the Chaplain
The chaplains are available to assist you twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. They are in-house during typical business hours and are available for emergencies evenings, weekends, and holidays. You may reach the Point Chaplain or any of the unit chaplains by dialing 818-496-4700.
In the midst of troublesome times, it is often helpful to spend some time in a quiet place. To facilitate your ability to pray or meditate for a period of time, a chapel is located on the first floor adjacent to the Main Lobby.
