Emergency Care Patient and Family Support
Emergency rooms are busy environments that are designed to take care of any injury or illness. Emergency departments are limited in size and resources, so processes are put in place to care for patients and support their families as efficiently as possible, without compromising the quality of care.
Because of these limited resources we have to make choices on how care is provided. The choices made by our facility and, indeed, by all other emergency rooms in the world are determined by the following protocols:
- Emergent illnesses are our priority
- The sicker are seen first
- Expensive, non-emergent studies (such as MRIs that are not an emergency) are scheduled for another time, to leave the equipment open for those with a true emergency and to reduce costs
- All patients are treated, regardless of their ability to pay
