Providence Tarzana and Providence Holy Cross named among America’s 100 Best Hospitals

February 26, 2018

Providence Tarzana and Providence Holy Cross medical centers were recognized today among the nation’s top hospitals, earning Healthgrades’ 2018 America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award.

For Providence Tarzana, undergoing a major expansion and renovation project, it is the fourth straight year on the top 100 list. This is the first for Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills.

“Even in the midst of the challenges presented by moving departments for our ongoing construction, our physicians and caregivers continue to provide the best possible care for our patients and their families,” said Dale Surowitz, Providence Tarzana’s chief executive. “I am so inspired by their dedication to our community.”

“This honor belongs to every member of the Holy Cross family,” said Bernard Klein, M.D., chief executive of Providence Holy Cross. “Each has a role in ensuring our patients are treated with respect and excellence, from the moment they come through our doors till the moment they leave our care.”

Based on patient outcomes across 19 conditions and procedures, the distinction ranks the two San Fernando Valley hospitals among the top 2 percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance. These measures are evaluated by Healthgrades, a leading online consumer resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

From 2014 through 2016, patients treated in hospitals achieving Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospitals Award had, on average, 22.3 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive this award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures where mortality is the outcome. During this same period, if all other hospitals, as a group, performed at the level of America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award recipients across these 19 procedures and conditions, 162,284 lives potentially could have been saved.

“We commend the recipients of Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitasl Award for their commitment to delivering exceptional clinical outcomes,” said Brad Bowman, chief medical officer, Healthgrades. “The choice of a hospital is an important decision— one that can be a matter of life and death — so consumers should do their research and use trusted information like this to assess and select their facility of choice.”

The 100 recipients of the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2018 study period (2014-16), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).

Providence Tarzana has achieved outstanding outcomes for patients in cardiology, geriatrics, pulmonology and in its non-invasive surgical robotics program. Also noteworthy is the hospital’s partnership with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which raised the level of care available locally for patients in the pediatric unit and the pediatrics and neonatal intensive care units.

Providence Holy Cross, known for its emergency and trauma care, also is recognized for excellence for cardiology, pulmonology, surgery and women’s services. The hospital also partners with CHLA for NICU care and with City of Hope for cancer care – programs that bring world class specialty care to the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys. Providence affiliate Facey Medical Group brings a range of specialties to both hospitals, including hospitalist care at Holy Cross.
