Volunteers are an integral part of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. Our volunteers provide encouragement, comfort and strength to our patients and visitors. Helping others in their healing process can be a very satisfying and inspiring experience. Our Providence volunteers often make new friends and learn new skills along the way. Offer your time and talents and reap the rewards of serving our community and being appreciated.
We have over 300 volunteers ranging in age from 15 to over 80. Our volunteer opportunities are varied and interesting. See a listing of volunteer opportunities.
Volunteering can be rewarding, but it is also a serious commitment. For adults, a minimum commitment of six months service AND 125 hours is required. Therefore, offer your services only if you intend to do your best, have the time and ability to do so, and can accept guidance and supervision with enthusiasm. Teens are asked to serve a minimum of 150 hours over a 12 month period.
Nursing students who have already been accepted into a nursing program will find it difficult to incorporate volunteering into an already demanding schedule. We encourage you to concentrate on your course of studies.
We are very sensitive to the impact that the economy has had on our community. We are also aware that employment opportunities at this time are scarce. Please understand that the volunteer program is not a stepping stone for employment at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. We cannot provide outstanding service without our volunteers and that is why it’s important that we have continuity in our volunteer force. Please join our volunteer program based on a willingness to volunteer. If you are searching for a paid position, please look at the available positions being offered through our website.

People of all ages, backgrounds and abilities who want to help others can become volunteers. An initial interview matches each volunteer's interest, talent and schedule to the Medical Centers' needs.
As an adult PHCMC volunteer you are required to commit to a minimum of 125 hours/ 6 months of service, one, four-hour/or two, three-hour shifts per week on a regularly scheduled basis. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Teen volunteers (ages 15-17) are asked to make a commitment of 150 hours over a 12 month period. Applicants for the Spiritual Care and Pets with Purpose Program do have different criteria which will be discussed on an individual basis.
Teen orientations are held quarterly. The deadlines to apply for each session are:
- November 15th is the deadline for the Winter Orientation
- January 15th is the deadline for the Spring Orientation
- May 15th is the deadline for the Summer Orientation
- August 15th is the deadline for the Fall Orientation
Please submit a complete application with references attached. You will be contacted by email to confirm that we have received your application. You can submit your application by scanning and emailing to firstname.lastname@example.org or by postal mail. Unfortunately, we do not have the staff to accommodate walk-ins.
Documentation for service hours will be provided only after the minimum hour and time commitment has been fulfilled. Of course, we hope that our new volunteers will develop a caring commitment to Providence Holy Cross and will remain with us for many years.
The hospital invests time and expense to orient and train new volunteers. Therefore unless you are willing to stay the minimum period, we recommend that you seek volunteer service elsewhere.
Prospective volunteers must submit an application, have a personal interview with the Volunteer office, complete all paperwork in the Application Packet, receive a TB health clearance from our Employee Health Office, complete Medical Center Orientation and have a cleared background check if over the age of 18. In the case of college students or working volunteers this may mean missing a day of classes or work. You will be credited with service hours for attending Orientation. The preliminary process takes approximately 6-8 weeks before you can begin volunteering.
The Volunteer Office is eager to place volunteers in a setting where they feel comfortable and enjoy giving service. You will be consulted on your preferences before placement. All placements are subject to a trial period dependent upon the satisfaction of the department and the volunteer. The Volunteer Department does not exist to provide training for future employment, or to provide student service hours, but only to be of service where volunteers can provide enhanced services to patients, families, and staff.
If the above criteria meet your needs and available time, please complete our application and return by email, mail or in person to the Welcome Desk in the Main Lobby. We do not have the staff to accommodate walk-ins. We will contact you to set up an interview if we have an opening that matches your interest and availability. You can expect to receive a call confirming receipt of your application with two weeks of submittal.
