Dr. Matsunaga completed his urologic surgical residency at the University of California, Irvine. He worked closely with internationally renowned urologists Dr. Ralph Clayman and Dr. Elspeth McDougall receiving specialized training in cutting-edge, minimally invasive laparoscopic, robotic, and endourologic techniques. He earned several awards including the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons' Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident Surgeon Award and Long Beach Veteran's Hospital's Outstanding Customer Service and Outstanding Resident Awards. Following residency, he remained on the faculty at UCI while completing a robotics fellowship with Dr. Thomas Ahlering. The primary emphasis of the fellowship was mastery of the robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. To date, he has performed over 500 robotic and laparoscopic radical prostatectomies. Other robotic surgeries performed include partial nephrectomy, cystectomy, pyeloplasty and sacroculpopexy. As an educator, he trained residents in minimally invasive techniques and has helped lead courses in laparoscopy and robotics. As a certified robotics proctor, he also instructs other community urologists in performing robotic prostatectomies.
