Dr. Howard R. Krauss was born and raised in The Bronx and began his professional life in engineering, with degrees from Cooper Union and MIT, followed by a position at Hughes Aircraft Company. Having then decided to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Krauss entered medical school and obtained his medical degree at the ripe old age of 27. This was followed by postgraduate training in Ophthalmology at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute, Fellowship training in Neuro-ophthalmology and Orbital Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and then a 2-year stint as Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Southwestern Medical School, in Dallas, where he was Chief of Ophthalmology at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Chief of Neuro-ophthalmology, Oculoplastic Surgery and Strabismus, and Director of the Residency Training Program. Longing to return to the west coast, Dr. Krauss entered the private, clinical practice of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Surgery in 1984.
