NICU Physicians and Staff

Our NICU is staffed by a highly-skilled team of professionals who provide world-class care to premature and critically-ill newborns.

Neonatologists

The neonatologist is a doctor specializing in newborn intensive care and is the head of the medical team. Our NICU has a neonatologist on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Clinical Nurse Specialists

The clinical nurse specialist functions as the expert and resource person for the bedside nurse. He or she provides educational training for staff and families.

Clinical Supervisors

The clinical supervisor is the nurse in charge of the shift.

Primary Nurse

You will have a primary nurse assigned to care for your baby during each shift. This will be the person who spends the most time with you and your baby and will be a great source of knowledge about what is happening with your infant.

Respiratory Therapists

If the baby is receiving any type of oxygen therapy, including ventilation, a respiratory therapist will be involved in monitoring and administering treatments to help with breathing.

Nutritionists

The nutritionist will determine the nutritional needs for your baby.

Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists

Our therapists work with the infants to assist in feeding and movement issues. They may also be involved in teaching parents exercises to promote developmental or cope with behavioral issues.

Lactation Consultants

Our lactation consultants have special training related to breast feeding. They are available to assist mothers with any breast feeding issues both before the baby is able to breast feed as well as during the transition to full-time breast feeding.

Chaplains

Our chaplains are available to counsel you and try to provide comfort. They are here to provide support to anyone looking for a spiritual/religious connection regardless of any particular religious affiliation.

Social Workers

Social workers are here to talk with parents about a variety of issues related to their baby's stay in the NICU. They can help you cope with the stress, discuss financial issues and help with discharge planning.

Management Team

In addition to the Clinical Nurse Specialists and Clinical Supervisors, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance has a NICU Manager and a Director of Women & Children's Services who are available to assist you and your family with any issues you may have.
