Let’s Plan Together

When you choose an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) to be your partner through pregnancy and delivery, we’ll help you create a birth plan that fits your preferences. We respect and honor your plan–understanding that preferences and safety concerns can change throughout your pregnancy and right up to delivery day.

Developing a birth plan is easier with an OB-GYN who listens to you, understands you, and shares in your decision-making. Need help finding an OB to fit your personality and preferences? Take this list of questions with you to your first appointment to help you find an OB-GYN partner who’s right for you.

A Modern Labor and Delivery Approach

When you go into labor, you can expect the same level of supportive, compassionate, and safe care you’ve received throughout your pregnancy. We’ll respect your birth plan, and you’ll be able to choose when and if pain medication will be used. Your labor and delivery experience will be based on your preferences and what is safest for you and your baby at the time of delivery.

Most babies can be born with very little medical help, and that’s good news because when we minimize surgical intervention, we help ensure a safer delivery. We’ll monitor your health and the health of your baby during the labor and birthing process. Unless necessary, we’ll work with you to avoid common interventions like inducing labor or episiotomy to help prevent dangerous complications that can delay healing.

Lower Risk. Higher Confidence

At the same time, we know every birth is different, as is every new mom. If you choose an epidural for pain relief–even if you change your mind from your birth plan–we will honor your request when it’s safe to do. You are in charge of your birth experience, and that means easing your discomfort.

Did you know that women are three times more likely to experience complications during cesarean delivery? For your safety, our OB-GYNs encourage vaginal birth even if you’ve had a previous C-section, when possible. However, there are times when a cesarean delivery may be medically necessary, and our experts will help ensure both you and your baby are safe and comfortable.

Let’s Start this Journey Together

If you’re ready for an outstanding pregnancy experience, start by choosing an OB-GYN who will be a good fit for you and will prioritize your safety. It’s so important to find someone who listens to you, doesn't pressure you, and gets you–both your head and your heart.

It’s your pregnancy. Let Providence be your partner.

The centerpieces of our department are our comprehensive maternity suites, which provide a comfortable home-like environment for expectant mothers. These rooms are equipped with private bathrooms with showers and a birthing bed that is comfortable for the mother during labor and can be quickly converted for delivery.

Each suite has space for the father or significant other to stay, as well as room for other family members who wish to participate in the birthing experience. To facilitate mother/baby bonding, each birthing suite has room for a bassinet, so babies can remain with their mothers throughout their stay at the hospital.

In addition, our commitment to infant security will add peace of mind for the new parents and family. One component of our comprehensive infant security system includes identification bracelets for the baby, mom, and the baby's father or support person.

Postpartum Support

We understand that even more questions come once your baby arrives, which is why our care doesn’t end once you’ve given birth. As a Baby-Friendly Hospital, our experienced neonatologists and special trained nursing staff provide 24-hour postpartum care and support. These services include:

  • Breastfeeding education
  • Skin-to-skin contact assistance
  • Bottle feeding facilitation
  • Nurturing baby baths
  • Family-focused Assistance Programs
  • Transitional/observational newborn nursery

An official Baby-Friendly Hospital, Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance offers top quality maternity care during pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and through a mother’s postpartum period.

Whether you’re a new or experienced parent, our maternal caregivers create a caring and open environment designed to help you find joy and relieve some of the anxiety of your pregnancy. We welcome collaboration and create a personalized birth plan to fit every mother’s needs.

Our multidisciplinary team of obstetric professionals and specialists work to make pregnancy and birth a healthy and joyous event. Focused on growing the bond between parent and child, our core team includes:

  • Board-certified obstetricians
  • Obstetric care coordinators
  • Board-certified laborists
  • Pediatricians
  • Neonatologists
  • International board-certified lactation consultants
  • Certified registered nurses
  • Certified lactation educators
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Maternal-fetal medicine specialists

To ensure patient safety, we’ve instituted a laborist program in our department. A laborist is a board-certified OB-GYN who is in the hospital 24/7 to provide exclusive care to patients. They are able to perform vaginal deliveries or cesarean sections and address any pregnancy complications, including hemorrhages, preeclampsia and infections.

Within 30 days after your baby’s birth, you will be required to separately enroll your baby in an insurance plan.

Most insurance plans that offer maternity benefits will include well-baby care under the mother’s plan for the first 30 days following birth. We recommend you contact your insurance provider directly to find out what the regulations are on health insurance coverage for your baby. The Human Resources department at your workplace may also be able to assist you with this information.

It is your responsibility to notify the Admitting staff at Providence of any and all insurance plans you may have for yourself and your baby.

It is also very important to notify Admitting of any changes in your insurance plans. The hospital has specific deadlines for notifying insurance providers about your admission as well as notifying them on the birth of your baby. If we do not have correct and complete information, your insurance may not cover the services provided and you may be responsible for any incurred charges.

While making plans to deliver your baby at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance, we suggest you pack a suitcase by the beginning of your ninth month, and have it ready with all of the items you will need during your stay, including:
