Unforeseen events can happen very quickly during pregnancy and labor. If a physician has to be summoned from home, they might not arrive in time for a very quick delivery, ruptured uterus, emergency cesarean section or other potentially dangerous situation.
To ensure patient safety, in 2012 Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance instituted what’s known as a laborist program. A laborist is a board-certified OB-GYN who cares for patients exclusively in the hospital and is in the hospital 24/7 for any prenatal or obstetric emergencies.
A laborist can perform vaginal deliveries or cesarean sections and address any pregnancy complications, including hemorrhages, preeclampsia and infections. In an obstetrical emergency, every minute counts, so the presence of these highly trained physicians means that treatment can begin without delay.
