Healthgrades ranks hospitals in top specialties

A report released today by Healthgrades, a national independent source of hospital quality ratings, recognized all six Providence Health & Services, Southern California, medical centers for excellent clinical outcomes.

Providence medical centers received a total of 45 awards and recognitions in a variety of specialties including critical care, pulmonology, cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology and orthopedics.         

“Our physicians, nurses and other clinicians – our entire team – are committed to providing the best possible care, resulting in the best possible outcomes across all our specialties,” said Lanny Eason, M.D., chief medical officer of Providence Health & Services, Southern California. “All of our Providence caregivers share in these awards from Healthgrades, which measures quality and patient safety based on outcomes and complication rates.”

In addition to the awards listed below, Healthgrades bestowed its Patient Safety Excellence Award to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance for the fourth straight year and to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank for the second consecutive year. Recipients rank among the top 5 percent across the nation for patient safety.

Healthgrades provides a consumer website that allows consumers to review hospitals for quality. Here are the awards each Providence medical center earned:

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 32 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
