Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center offers the following Support Groups for patients, families and members of the community:

Breast Feeding Support Group

This support group is where nursing mothers get support with breastfeeding issues, have questions answered, and get encouragement from certified lactation consultants in a group setting. Registration is required.

The Connection Group

Designed for parents and children, the Connection Group focuses on encouraging confidence and fostering relationships. We create a nurturing and supportive environment so children can freely interact with one another and learn through play. We help parents adjust to parenthood, model ways to participate in your child’s development, and discuss a wide range of topics that cover the joys and challenges of raising a baby. Registration is required.

Diabetes Support Groups

Diabetes Self Management Series

The Diabetes Self Management Education Program is a 2-Saturday class series that empowers the participants to successfully manage their diabetes. Skills related to nutrition, physical activity, home blood glucose monitoring, medication taking, problem solving related to blood glucose, reducing risks of diabetes are taught by Certified Diabetes Educators (RN, RD), Clinical Social Workers and Physical Therapists. Individual Sessions with a Diabetes Specialist

A Diabetes Nurse Educator teaches you how to

  • Monitor blood sugar
  • Prevent, recognize and treat low/high blood sugars
  • Treat your diabetes when you are sick
  • Administer insulin therapy
  • Prevent or delay diabetes complications

A Dietitian develops an individualized eating plan that takes into account:

  • The foods you like to eat
  • Your lifestyle
  • Your eating habits
  • Your medical needs

Course Fees

Both the Diabetes Self Management Series and the Individual Sessions are covered by many major health insurance plans including Medicare. Prior authorization is necessary for HMO insurance plans. Cash payment can be arranged.

Preparing for Total Joint Replacement

A couple of weeks before your surgery, your orthopedic surgeon'Äôs office will contact you to schedule an education class with other patients who are having joint replacement surgery. In class, you'll learn about the details of your surgery and what to expect during your hospital stay. You'll have the opportunity to view equipment, discuss treatments and therapies and meet the orthopedic team who'll take care of you during your stay.

Stroke Support Groups

Stroke Support Group

Facilitators: Marilyn Zelen, MSW, Clinical Social Worker; Samuel Scriven, Senior Chaplain

To help stroke survivors, their families and close friends cope with the aftermath of stroke. This group provides information on stroke recovery, resources and a forum to learn new coping skills. Meets the third Tuesday of each month, 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Bereavement Support Group

Facilitators: Geniella Putman, Clinical Social Worker; Margaret Burdge, Chaplain

To offer support and counsel after the loss of a loved one.

Meets every week for eight Thursdays, starting January 31, 2013 through March 21, 2013, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
