How many times have you smiled today

Studies suggest that happy people smile between 40 and 50 times a day. We take it for granted, but a big genuine smile has the power to transform our day!

At the Disney Family Cancer Center, caring for patients who have experienced the loss of healthy teeth and a good smile has taken center stage, thanks to advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers.

“Over the last few years we have seen a large increase in the number of patients who are developing cancer of the head and neck at a younger age,” said Rex Hoffman, M.D., cancer center director of radiation. “This new group of patients appears to have a better prognosis, and experts suspect a normal lifespan may be possible.”

Dental care before, during and after radiation treatment is crucial to maintaining healthy teeth and a good smile. Unfortunately, access to care is limited due to the lack of dental coverage in many insurance plans. As a result, patients don’t have the funds to see a dentist – or they are seen by a dentist who has no experience in caring for patients who have received radiation.

“As healthcare providers, we are devastated when we see a patient years out from treatment who appears to be cured, but needs to have all or part of their teeth or jaw removed due to lack of dental care,” said Dr. Hoffman.
