Providence Tarzana Medical Center named one of Healthgrades’ 2016 America’s 100 Best Hospitals

February 26, 2016

Providence Tarzana Medical Center was recognized today with the Healthgrades 2016 America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award, for the second straight year.

The distinction ranks Providence Tarzana among the top 2 percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for its consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, a leading online consumer resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

“Day after day, our caregivers provide outstanding care, raising the bar on quality and compassion in health care,” said Dale Surowitz, the hospital’s chief executive. “Receiving this recognition not one but two years in a row speaks to a consistent, very high level of patient care. I’m inspired by our physicians, our nurses and all those whose mission it is be the best.”

From 2012 through 2014, Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award recipients, as a group, had a 26.5 percent lower risk adjusted mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions compared to all other hospitals. During this same period, if all other hospitals had performed at the level of America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award recipients, these 19 procedures and conditions, 170,705 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, heart failure patients treated at a hospital that has achieved this award had, on average, a 32.1 percent lower risk of dying during hospital stays than if treated at a hospital that did not receive the award.

Providence Tarzana specializes in cardiovascular care, orthopedics, emergency medicine and women’s services and partners with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to provide the highest level of pediatric and neonatal intensive care available in northern Los Angeles County.

Variation in hospital performance exists locally as well as nationally. In the Los Angeles-Orange county area, nine hospitals of 51 that were eligible received the award. Providence Tarzana is among this region’s hospitals that provide some of the best quality care across at least 21 of 32 common inpatient conditions and procedures evaluated by Healthgrades over a period of at least six years.

“Our analysis shows there is tremendous variation in care, so it’s important for consumers to carefully research and choose a hospital,” said Evan Marks, Healthgrades’ chief strategy officer. “We commend the recipients of the America’s 100 Best Hospital Award for delivering exceptional clinical outcomes that help them stand out from their peers in terms of overall clinical performance.”

The 100 recipients of the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2016 study period (2012-2014), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures —as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
