Torrance honored for heart care and patient safety

Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance was honored this week as one of the nation’s top 100 hospitals for care of heart patients and also for patient safety.

Becker's Hospital Review included the hospital in its 2015-16 "100 Hospitals and Health Systems With Great Heart Programs" list. And the Leapfrog Group gave Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance an “A” grade for patient safety.

The hospitals included on this year's list are national leaders are recognized for clinical excellence for certain procedures, such as heart bypass and valve surgeries, and treatment of heart failure and heart attack patients. Through their comprehensive programs, they also support heart education and disease prevention efforts, such as the low-cost comprehensive heart screenings the hospital offers at three locations in the South Bay.

Becker’s selected hospitals for inclusion based on national rankings and awards from several institutions, including U.S. News & World Report rankings for cardiology and heart surgery, Truven Health Analytics' cardiovascular hospital rankings and Healthgrades, a consumer web site.

The hospital also earned an “A” rating for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group, ranking it among the top 25 percent in the nation for patient safety. Leapfrog graded hospitals nationwide according to performance on a series of safety measures ranging from simple hand-washing to policies to guard against errors in surgery. Scores were based on publicly reported measures, preventable hospital conditions such as infections, falls, bedsores and other sources of harm.
