Quality Cardiac Care at Providence Little Company of Mary

March 15, 2014

In the middle of the night, Michael Franks suddenly awoke – unable to breathe.

His wife Lisa immediately called 9-1-1 and he was rushed by ambulance to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance. On the way to the hospital, he had several seizures. Paramedics had to revive him when his heart stopped a second time.

A skilled team of emergency room physicians and cardiologists took immediate action. They stabilized him, ran a variety of tests and, within hours, Michael was in surgery where a pacemaker was implanted to regulate his heartbeat.

Michael is grateful to be alive and well today thanks to the swift, well-coordinated response of paramedics and doctors as well as the exceptional support he received during his recovery.

He recalls being comforted by the gentle sense of humor of a nurse wearing a “smiley face” mask, and by another nurse who gave him a special recipe that he was eager to try once he was well enough to return to his kitchen. For Michael, the overall quality of care at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance made a big difference. He returned to work three weeks after the ordeal, and today he continues to be healthy and active.

Michael, co-owner of Chez Melange restaurant, considers Little Company of Mary his trusted hospital. A long-time community partner, he has “always felt very aligned” with our ministry. Now that he also has been a patient, he feels an even deeper connection.

For more than 50 years, Providence Little Company of Mary has proudly provided the South Bay with excellent, compassionate care. Today, we are more committed than ever to making our services better, more efficient and cost-effective and more accessible for each person who comes through our doors.

Last year, donors like you supported critical improvements to our emergency room, strengthening accessibility and security for our patients. Your contributions also helped purchase much needed imaging equipment and allowed us to upgrade technology within our operating rooms, labs and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Thanks to our tremendous team of physicians and nurses as well as our beautiful facility, we have been widely recognized for quality, safety, and outstanding care:

  • For the third consecutive year, we have been named one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the country by Truven Health Analytics.
  • We have been honored as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission, the leading health accrediting organization in America.
  • In addition, we received the Blue Shield Blue Cross Cardiac Center of Excellence designation last year, and we remain a Los Angeles County STEMI (heart attack) Receiving Center. Our other specialties, such as stroke care, orthopedics, and surgery, have also earned top honors.
  • In January 2014, Healthgrades® recognized us with Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence Award, counting us among the top 100 hospitals in the nation.

These are just some of the accomplishments that your giving has helped make possible, and we are truly grateful for your dedication.

In the wake of recent changes in health care, we are proud to continue to offer the leading edge, personalized services and comfort that you, your family and your neighbors expect and deserve. It is a tradition we honor and a passion shared by each of our caregivers.

It is no exaggeration to say that your support will help save lives, and to make countless others better.
