Excellent Care at Providence Holy Cross Level II Trauma Center

March 15, 2014

Last fall, Frank Salinas was enjoying his usual bike ride to work when tragedy struck.

Bystanders watched, horrified, as Frank was hit by a car and thrown into the air while the driver sped off. They immediately called 9-1-1.

“I was in shock and didn't realize what had happened to me. When I called my wife, I told her the paramedics said I had been hit by car,” says Frank.

He was rushed to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center’s trauma unit. Doctors immediately realized that Frank had severe head trauma and suffered multiple fractures to his face. If he had not been wearing a helmet, it is likely that he would not have survived the accident.

Because of the severity of his head injuries, Frank was moved to the Intensive Care Unit, where he spent nearly a week fighting for his life, with his loved ones by his bedside.

His sister, Yolee, a registered nurse with years of experience, was terrified knowing just how serious the situation was. However, as soon as she saw that Holy Cross was a Magnet-certified hospital for nursing excellence, it put her at ease and gave her confidence in the care.

Meanwhile, Frank’s wife, Lisa, felt comforted by the spiritual and emotional support she found at the medical center. “The experience was exhausting – there’s no way I could have done it alone,” says Lisa.

During his stay, Frank was watched over by many Holy Cross staff members, from physicians and nurses, to chaplains, to social workers. Through the ups and downs of his recovery, he and his family found each interaction to be comforting and compassionate. His caregivers seemed to know exactly what each of them needed.

Today, Frank has completely healed and he and his family feel very blessed. He appreciates every moment and every opportunity to enjoy life.

After this experience, he and Lisa consider Holy Cross their “home hospital,” knowing that it is not only accessible, but also an excellent center of care they can depend on when they need it most.

Providence Holy Cross is proud to provide outstanding services that make a life-changing difference for so many families. Just as we were here for Frank, we are for you and your loved ones with top-quality medical resources and world class physicians, whenever you may need us most.

Thanks in great part to generous donors, we are here for our patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As a Level II trauma center, we have been part of the Los Angeles Trauma System for more than 25 years, and we are one of only two trauma centers in the Valley.

In addition, we recently received the Distinguished Top Hospitals Award for Clinical Excellence by Healthgrades and were once again named a Magnet Designated Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. These are just some of the accomplishments that your giving has helped make possible, and we are truly grateful for your dedication.
