Providence So Cal Medical Centers Awarded for Quality

October 23, 2013

A report released today by Healthgrades, the nation’s leading independent source of physician information and hospital quality ratings, recognized all five Providence Health & Services, Southern California, medical centers for excellent clinical outcomes. Hospital outcomes and complication rates are important in the eyes of consumers making choices today about their healthcare.

According to new research conducted by Harris Interactive for Healthgrades, 90 percent of Americans in 27 top designated market areas agree they would be more likely to choose—or not choose—a hospital if they could learn ahead of time their chances of complications for a certain procedure. Together the medical centers garnered 65 Healthgrades awards for quality.

“More and more consumers are researching their choices in healthcare providers and Providence is proud to continue providing excellent care to the communities we serve,” said Laurence Eason, regional chief medical officer for Providence Southern California. “In the last year, Providence has teamed with some of the area’s finest physicians who, along with our nurses and other clinicians, are driven to improve the entire continuum of care, which results in the best possible outcomes. The proof is in this extensive list of awards for quality performance.”

Providence, a Catholic not-for-profit organization, operates Providence Holy Cross, Providence Saint Joseph and Providence Tarzana medical centers in the San Fernando Valley and Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers in Torrance and San Pedro.

For its 2013 hospital quality outcomes analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40million Medicare hospitalization records for services performed at short-term, acute care hospitals nationwide. Healthgrades found that patients treated in hospitals receiving 5 stars had, on average, 75 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals receiving 1 star (across 18 common procedures and diagnoses, such as heart bypass surgery, stroke, and pneumonia). Healthgrades independently measures hospitals based on data that hospitals submit to the federal government. No hospital can opt in or out of being measured, and no hospital pays to be measured. Healthgrades risk adjusts for patient demographic characteristics and clinical risk factors, thereby taking into account how sick patients were before they were admitted to the hospital.
