TORRANCE (Dec. 6, 2011) – The Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Charitable Foundation, Inc. has donated $500,000 to the Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation to continue two critically important services – cardiovascular health and primary care – at the community clinic that bears the family name.
The Polak Foundation has been Providence Little Company of Mary’s most generous benefactor with gifts totalling $6 million, including funding to establish Providence’s Vasek Polak Health Clinic in Hawthorne. The first of its kind in the South Bay, this clinic serves the primary care needs of a growing number of uninsured and under-insured working adults.
This latest major gift ensures continued services at the clinic at a time when more and more patients are seeking lower-cost health care. “Vasek Polak would be very proud of what Providence Little Company of Mary has done to perpetuate his name and to support the community that he loved so much,” Sam Menzelos, president of the Polak Foundation. Polak died in 1997.
The clinic provides an affordable, low cost, fixed price alternative to emergency room visits and offers a “medical home” to those without a physician. Since its inception in December 2007, the clinic has seen 13,000 patients. The Clinic has also attracted significant support from the California Community Foundation, the Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance Auxiliary and a host of individual donors.
The Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Charitable Foundation’s initial grant of $3 million to Providence Little Company of Mary established the Vasek Polak Cardiovascular Institute, which opened in 2003 at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance. The institute provides comprehensive services ranging from diagnostic examination and treatment to advanced testing and recovery care.
Vasek Polak was a self-made business man with an auto service business specializing in Porsches and racing vehicles. His success made it possible for him to share his good fortune with the community. Hawthorne Mayor Danny Juarez speaks proudly of Vasek Polak Clinic located in a thriving retail location.
“The Vasek Polak Health Clinic has made a tremendous impact on working adults in our community because the cost of care is known in advance, the facility is beautiful and the customer service is top notch,” Juarez said. “This clinic has become a valuable community asset.” Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation provides institutional support and community outreach though Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers in San Pedro and Torrance.
