Acute Rehabilitation Center at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro Ranked Among the Nation’s Best

SAN PEDRO (March 8, 2011) - Rehabcentre, the award-winning acute rehabilitation program at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro, has been ranked for the second consecutive year among the nation’s top 5 percent of facilities that provide therapy for patients recovering from stroke and severe injuries.

The nonprofit Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation, which measures a program’s performance in the functional improvement of patients and other criteria, has rated the program among the best in the United States in a study of nearly 800 facilities nationwide. Rehabcentre, celebrating its 30th year, is the only acute rehabilitation center in the South Bay.

“We are so proud of our Rehabcentre staff, the nurses and therapists who challenge patients each day to regain basic skills and to ensure they can function well once they go home,” said Nancy Carlson, chief executive of Providence Little Company of Mary San Pedro. “Their compassion and dedication show in their patients’ achievements.”

The recently announced 2011 ratings are based on a comprehensive scoring that includes review of patients’ success in performing daily living activities following treatment; length-of-stay in an acute rehab facility; and whether patients are discharged to other care facilities or to their homes. The ranking takes into account the types of cases each facility handles and the complexity of the care required.

More than 70 percent of Rehabcentre’s patients are recovering from strokes or brain or spinal cord injuries. Others suffer traumatic injuries or fractures or neurologic disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Treatment includes physical, occupational and speech therapy, ongoing psychology and neuropsychology services and spiritual care. Rehabcentre’s goal is to return patients to their homes home with the maximum level of independence possible.

“This is a team award, and one that’s very difficult to achieve,” said Karen Frederick, the hospital’s director of rehabilitation, respiratory therapy and neurodiagnostics. “There are so many people involved with each patient – the nurses, the therapists, the physicians. Each member of the team contributes to our success.”

Frederick credited the program’s medical director, Anh Long, M.D., in particular for the direction and the motivation she provides that result in the high level of success indicated by Rehabcentre’s top rating. The program has been ranked in the top 20 percent in the nation since the ratings system was instituted five years ago – including a 98th percentile ranking in that first year.

Rehabcentre is Medicare-certified and accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities for comprehensive inpatient medical rehabilitation.
