August 9, 2017

U.S. News & World Report today recognized four Providence medical centers in the Los Angeles area among California’s best hospitals, noting high performance in a total of five specialties and for treatments and procedures for five conditions.

  • Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance was ranked No. 16 in California, and noted for treatment and procedures for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery and heart failure.
  • Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, No. 22 in the state, was honored as high performing in four specialties; gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, pulmonology and urology and for conditions and procedures for colon cancer, aortic valve surgery, heart failure and COPD.
  • Providence Tarzana Medical Center, No. 32, listed for excelling in two specialties, geriatrics and diabetes/endocrinology, and high performance in treatment and procedures for colon cancer and heart failure.
  • Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, No. 44, was rated as high performing for the procedures and conditions for colon cancer and hip and knee replacements.

“This recognition reflects the Providence commitment to excellence in caring for our patients in a wide range of specialties,” said Michael Bernstein, M.D., chief medical officer, Providence Medical Foundations, Los Angeles. “Our physicians and clinicians provide consistent high quality care for our patients through their skills, patient education, care coordination, technology, research and whole person care that  addresses not only physical needs, but emotional and spiritual as well.”

The four hospitals were ranked as high performing for treatment of colon cancer on the same day a report by the Journal of the American Medical Association found a surge in deaths from the disease among young and middle-aged white men and women.

The U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 28th year, help guide patients to hospitals that deliver outstanding care across 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. The Best Hospitals methodologies include objective measures such as patient survival, the number of times a given procedure is performed, infection rates, adequacy of nurse staffing and more.

For 2017-18, 53 of California’s estimated 420 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.
