Community Outreach

CBR_vid_thmb2As People of Providence, we’re on a mission for healthy communities and help by providing help to tens of thousands of our neighbors who have tremendous needs. In 2012, Providence answered the needs of more than a quarter million people providing nearly $167 million in community benefit services. We do this for a simple reason. Providence Cares.

In following the tradition of our founding Sisters of Providence and Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, we live a Mission of outreach that dates back to the Civil War era. Providence Southern California has built a broad range of community benefit programs serving the elderly, the uninsured, our immigrants, school children and those with mental illnesses.

This service to the poor and vulnerable is a responsibility we all embrace. Our board members serve as eyes and ears in the community and take seriously our call to serve. Our executive teams carefully steward our resources to ensure we can finance this Mission. And our employees with their spirit, compassion, dedication and innovation help sustain this sacred responsibility to those in need.

We were fortunate this past year to continue our established services – including Tattoo Removal, GOAL for diabetes patients, our clinics and our support programs for seniors. We expanded others, most notably COPA -- Creating Opportunity for Physical Activity – a free program serving elementary schools in lower-income areas.

With all the economic and political uncertainty of 2012, Providence Southern California continued to expand the Mission through our own programs and through partnerships with community organizations whose missions and values align with ours.

One of our most exciting endeavors in 2012 was a medical mission to Guatemala where a volunteer team of physicians, nurses and other clinicians from our region performed more than 60 surgeries for patients in an impoverished village with very little access to comprehensive health care. We teamed with Faith in Practice for this first-ever international medical mission sponsored by the System’s newly formed Providence Health International.

And we worked behind the scenes here at home. Our efficiency experts worked with two of our community partners to revise some of their processes to run more efficiently, resulting in better service to their clients and creating another opportunity for us to live our core value of excellence.

We are privileged at Providence to have the resources and individual talents to help our less fortunate neighbors. The work is inspiring and rewarding. We do this together because Providence Cares.
